La temporada de premios 2023-24 arranca con el anuncio del Proyecto de Cineastas Independientes (Independent Filmmaker Project, IFP) quien reveló a todos los nominados de la edición número 33 de sus galardones, conocidos en la industria como los Premios Gotham o los Gotham Awards.
La IFP es la organización más grande en los Estados Unidos dedicada al cine y televisión indie. Esta reconoce anualmente a los cineastas y artistas independientes. El Gotham Award es considerado el inicio no oficial de la temporada del Óscar, sin embargo, los premiados no siempre se alinean con los del Óscar, pero sí juegan un rol importante en el camino a la estatuilla dorada.
En esta ocasión, el drama All of Us Strangers resultó la película con más nominaciones (4 candidaturas), incluyendo en la categoría mejor película internacional. Le sigue Past Lives, y A Thousand and One. Ambos fueron nominados a mejor película del año. Dicha categoría se peleará también entre Showing Up, Passages, y Reality.
La mejor película internacional se debatirá entre All of Us Strangers, Anatomy of a Fall, Poor Things, The Zone of Interest, y el largometraje originario de México, Tótem, que además, es la elegida de México para representar al país por una posible nominación al Óscar 2024.
ALGUNOS DATOS:
- Primer año en que la ceremonia anual de los Gotham Awards, eliminó un límite presupuestario de $35 millones de dólares para las películas elegibles. Aun así, la mayoría de los contendientes provienen de estudios independientes. Hubo algunas excepciones, como Ryan Gosling, quien fue nominado por su papel como Ken en Barbie de Greta Gerwig.
- A partir de 2021, los Gotham eliminaron el género de las categorías actorales.
- Ganadores de ediciones pasadas incluyen a Spotlight (2015), Moonlight (2016), Everything Everwhere All at Once (2022). Todas ganaron el Óscar a mejor película.
- Películas que optaron por no ser incluidas en los Gotham, incluyen Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Napoleon, The Color Purple, y The Iron Claw.
Los Gotham rendirán homenaje a Bradley Cooper, entregándole el Cultural Icon and Creator Tribute por su largometraje Maestro; mientras que Air de Ben Affleck recibirá el Visionary Icon and Creator Tribute.
Los ganadores se darán a conocer el 27 de noviembre de 2023 en la ceremonia que será realizada en Cipriani Wall Street en la ciudad de Nueva York.
