La noche de este jueves 11 de enero, la Asociación de Críticos de Cine (Broadcast Film Critics Association) y la Asociación de Periodistas Críticos de Televisión (Broadcast Television Journalists Association), celebraron la edición 23 de los Critics Choice Awards, o Premios de la Crítica Cinematográfica en el Barker Hanger en Santa Monica, California.
La gala conducida por Olivia Munn y emitida en vivo por CW Network en Estados Unidos, y canal TNT en Latinoamérica, vio al cineasta mexicano Guillermo del Toro, alzarse en grande como mejor director y mejor película por el romance de fantasía The Shape of Water, que llegaba a los Critics Choice como la más nominada (14 menciones). El filme también se llevó a casa el premio a la mejor banda sonora (Alexandre Desplat) y diseño de producción.
Por el lado de la televisión, la serie de FX, Feud: Bette and Joan, llegó a la gala como la más nominada (6 menciones) y se fue a casa con las manos vacías. Por su parte, el hit de HBO, Big Little Lies, continuó su racha ganadora, alzándose con 4 Critics Choice, incluyendo mejor serie limitada o telefilm y mejor actriz en serie limitada o telefilm (Nicole Kidman). Como mejor serie dramática, The Handmaid's Tale y su protagonista, Elisabeth Moss, no dieron marcha atrás a su extraordinario paso por las ceremonias de premiación, por el desgarrador relato original de Hulu.
Tradicionalmente se considera a los Critics Choice Awards como la predicción más certera de las nominaciones del Premio Óscar (que se anunciarán el 23 de enero).
