Habiendo ganado recientemente en importantes premiaciones como los Golden Globes y el Sindicato de Productores (PGA), el musical La La Land, continuó su racha ganadora en los Director’s Guild Awards (Sindicato de Directores), en donde Damien Chazelle, se llevó el premio grande de la noche como el mejor director de la edición 69 de los DGA Awards.
La ceremonia llevada a cabo el sábado por la noche en el Beverly Hilton Hotel, consolidó el estatus del musical, como la gran favorita de cara al Óscar. Este premio en especial, se considera importante para predecir el ganador de la estatuilla dorada, ya que, en todas sus ediciones, excepto en siete, su máximo ganador ha ido a ganar la categoría como director en el Premio de la Academia.
Chazelle se impuso a Garth Davis (Lion), Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea) y Denis Villeneuve (Arrival).
Pero Davis no se fue a casa con las manos vacías, ya que aunque no triunfó como mejor director, si lo hizo en la categoría como mejor director debutante, superando a Tim Miller (Deadpool); Kelly Fremon Craig (Edge of Seventeen); Nate Parker (The Birth of a Nation) y Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane).
Por el lado de la televisión en la categoría dramática, Miguel Sapochnik se llevó a casa el galardón por su inmensa labor en el épico episodio Battle of the Bastards de la serie de HBO, Game of Thrones, imperando sobre el trabajo revelación que ha sido Stranger Things, de los hermanos Matt y Ross Duffer; Jonathan Nolan por Westworld; y John Singleton y Ryan Murphy por distintos episodios de The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.
En la comedia, Becky Martin triunfó por su trabajo detrás de la lente en Veep; en la categoría dirección de películas para televisión o miniserie Steve Zaillian por The Night Of, y Ezra Edelman por O.J.: Made in America en la categoría como mejor dirección en documental. El premio le fue entregado por Sarah Paulson y Cuba Gooding Jr.
Christopher Nolan, y los actores Michael Fassbender y Billy Crudup, presentaron el premio honorífico DGA’s Lifetime Achievement Award al talentoso cineasta Ridley Scott.
