La tarde de este domingo 6 de marzo de 2022, se celebró la entrega número 37 de los Film Independent Spirit Awards, organización que anualmente reconoce lo mejor del cine y televisión independiente, y que este año regresó a la celebración tradicional en persona, luego de haber optado por hacerlo virtual en la edición de 2021.
- La gala fue conducida por Megan Mullally y Nick Offerman, con transmisión en vivo a través de IFC y AMC+ en los Estados Unidos.
- Por segundo año consecutivo, se rompió la tradición de entregar sus premios en la antesala del Óscar; en 2021 se entregaron tres días antes, y esta vez se adelantó tres semanas respecto al Óscar.
La película The Lost Daughter de Maggie Gyllenhaal, triunfó a lo grande en la gala celebrada en Santa Mónica, CA., llevándose a casa las preseas a mejor largometraje, además de mejor guion y mejor director, ambos para Gyllenhaal, quien debutó como directora con la cinta original de Netflix.
Otros de los ganadores incluyen a Taylour Paige como mejor actriz protagónica (Zola), Simon Rex como mejor actor en rol protagónico (Red Rocket), Troy Kotsur como mejor actor en rol secundario (CODA), Ruth Negga como mejor actriz en rol secundario (Passing), Drive My Car como mejor película internacional, y Summer of Soul de Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson a mejor documental. El premio Robert Altman se le entregó a Mass.
En el rubro televisivo, el Spirit Award a mejor elenco fue para Reservation Dogs, que además ganó el premio a mejor serie guionizada nueva. Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Rail) ganó el premio a mejor actriz protagónica en serie guionizada nueva, mientras Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game) repitió lo logrado en los SAG Awards, y se llevó a casa el premio a mejor actor en rol protagónico en serie guionizada nueva.
