Desde la playa en Santa Mónica, CA., se llevaron a cabo los Film Independent Spirit Awards, que anualmente reconocen lo mejor del cine y tv independiente. La tarde del domingo 25 de febrero, se entregó la edición 39 de los llamados Spirit Awards, emitiendo en vivo la ceremonia de premiación conducida por Aidy Bryant (SNL).
La aclamada Past Lives de Celine Song levantó la presea a Mejor Película, minutos después de que la propia Song ganara el premio Spirit a Mejor Dirección. Otras de las películas favoritas de la temporada, The Holdovers, y American Fiction, también disfrutaron múltiples triunfos, incluyendo Mejor Actuación para Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction) y Mejor Guion para Cord Jefferson (American Fiction), y Mejor Actuación de Reparto para Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers), con lo que termina de afianzar que será ella la ganadora del Óscar en dicha categoría, y Mejor Actuación Revelación para Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers).
En el rubro televisivo, Beef y The Last of Us fueron las más ganadoras con dos premios para cada una de ellas.
Les recordamos que a partir de la edición de 2023, los Spirit Awards cambiaron las categorías actorales a género neutro, tanto en categorías de cine, como de televisión. Además, se incrementó el presupuesto del filme a $30 millones de dólares para ser elegible a los premios. Previamente, el presupuesto para ser elegible no debía superar los $22.7 mdd.
Desde 2023, los Spirit Awards, que tradicionalmente se entregaban un día antes de los Óscars, han estado alejándose de la gala dorada de Hollywood. El año anterior lo hicieron una semana previa al Óscar, y esta vez dos semanas previas. Cabe recalcar que esta misma semana se cierran las votaciones para el Premio de la Academia.
